A vehicle slammed into the ARC building along Main Street in Teutopolis over the weekend.

State police say the crash occurred at 1:12am Saturday and involved a SUV and an Illinois State Police squad car.  The SUV, driven by 28-year-old Elicia McClain of Lusby, Maryland, and the squad car, driven by 52-year-old Trooper David Mahon of Effingham were both eastbound on Route 40 or Main Street through Teutopolis.  McClain was observed tapping the brakes on her rental vehicle four times and swerving to the right.  Mahon, who was answering a DUI call, approached McClain and was attempting to pass her vehicle on the left.  As Mahon approached, McClain slowed and veered to the right and Mahon began to pass.  At the same time, McClain then turned left into the path of Mahon's squad car in an apparent attempt to make a U-turn.  The squad car struck McClain's vehicle, causing it to run off Main Street and into the southeast corner of the ARC Community Support Systems building at Main and Race Streets.

McClain suffered a cut, but declined treatment.  Mahon was not injured.

McClain was cited for DUI.

ARC-CSS Executive Director Mike Poe Monday said he was called to the scene about 2am Saturday.  He said the area struck by the vehicle contains offices for two ARC staff members.  He said they were meeting Monday to decide who would go where in the offices while the area damaged by the wreck is repaired.

Poe said some of the block wall would have to be removed and re-laid before interior repairs could begin.
