Saturday update:

After spending the night at a residence in Effingham, Gmur is headed west on Route 40 today on his way to Vandalia. We caught up with him on North Merchant street in Effingham, just before heavy rainfall moved through the area.

Friday's story:

If you see a man walking west on Route 40 between Greenup and Effingham this afternoon, that's likely actor and Marine Corps Veteran Michael Gmur.

Gmur is on a walking trip across the United States, raising money and awareness for homeless veterans, a cause that's important to him after spending 4 years in the Marine Corps. Gmur was deployed to Afghanistan with MARSOC Marine Special Operations Command and left the Marine Corps in 2010 as a Sergeant. After graduating from Cal State Northridge in 2015, Gmur has pursued a career as an actor.

He's walked about 1,200 miles thus far, after beginning his journey in Portland, Maine on June 8. Gmur spent last night in Casey, where area residents provided a hotel room, food and donated toward his cause.

Gmur plans to be in Effingham before 8 pm this evening. If you'd like to make a donation or provide food or shelter during his stay, he can be contacted via his Facebook page, located here. If you'd like to donate directly to his cause, Gmur has set up a GoFundMe account as well.

He hopes to end his journey this fall at Friendship Park in SanDiego, California.

Talking to us by phone Friday afternoon, Gmur said his trip has been good, and that "people have been really wonderful, they've really helped out."

He's had some excitement along the way as well, including some run-ins with wildlife, and crossing the Appalachian Mountains in record-breaking heat. Gmur said he's also had some close calls with vehicles not giving him some space.
