Statement From City Regarding Sounding of Sirens Monday Night

Below is an updated release from the City of Effngham Tuesday morning, regarding the sounding of sirens within the city Monday night.
Storm sirens were sounded in Effingham at 11:20pm Monday.
The sirens were sounded, according to Effingham City Police, due to a report from a trained weather spotter who told police they saw "rotation aloft" in the area of HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital.
There are no tornado warnings in effect and no reports of any touchdowns. Police indicated they got the report from someone trained in weather spotting, so they decided to sound the sirens. Thankfully, there was no touchdown or any damage.
There were severe storms in many counties in central and southeast Illinois Monday night including a report of a tornado touchdown in an area near Edinburg.
In addition to the storms, the heavy rainfall led to the issuing of flash flood warnings in several counties, so be cautious in low-lying areas.
