UPDATE: Fatal Single Vehicle Crash on I-57 South of Effingham

Emergency personnel responded to a single-vehicle crash on Southbound I-57, near the 155.5 Mile Marker this morning around 8:40 am.

Killed in the crash was 26-year old Brandon J. Fanno of New Castle, PA. Police say the truck Fanno was driving left the roadway to the right, went into the tree line, and rolled over. Fanno was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected in the crash.

A witness to the crash stopped to assist and was performing CPR when Effingham Fire Fighters and Abbott EMS arrived on the scene. A Medical Helicopter was initially called to the scene, but the helicopter was not utilized.

Effingham Fire Chief Bob Tutko indicated that the initial call was reported to be located at the 158 Mile Marker, within the Effingham Fire Department response area, however, the call actually occurred at the 155.5 Mile Marker located within the Watson Fire Protection District.

Watson Fire Protection District personnel also responded to the scene and assisted with scene control as well as searching the immediate area to ensure there were no other persons riding in the crashed vehicle.

Illinois State Police handled the investigation along with Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes.
