Mattoon police arrested a Chicago man Tuesday night in connection with counterfeit $100 bills.

(SMITH)

22-year-old Jkari Smith was arrested in the 100 block of Dettro Drive. Smith was arrested on counts of forgery and obstructing justice. The charges allege that the phony bills were passed at Aldi, Pet Smart and Buffalo Wild Wings in Mattoon. It's alleged that Smith used the fake currency to purchase small, inexpensive items and made away with real currency given as change in the transactions.

Smith is also alleged to have lied to police about his accomplice who aided and abetted Smith during the commission of the crimes.

Mattoon police are also searching for a grey Dodge Charger with dark rims and tinted windows they say was driven by the suspects.
