Effingham City Zoning Board of Appeals members have chosen new leadership for the coming term.

Mike Mumm was elected board chairman, succeeding Steve Swingler, and Mark Thies was chosen vice-chairman, succeeding Gary Welton. Swingler and Welton are still serving on the board.

The Board approved a variance for property at 511 South 5th Street, including a reduced side yard setback and reduced rear yard setback, and a reduction in the required distance between an accessory building and the main building on the property. Plans are to build a bigger shed on the lot at National and 5th to house a car.

The Board also granted a variance to reduce the south side yard setback for property owned by Jim Calhoon at 402 South 3rd Street. There are plans to locate a business on the site, so the property might be subdivided into more than one lot. The existing building is within three feet of the lot line. The variance would allow the building to be rebuilt on the same spot should it be damaged by fire or storm.

The Zoning Board also granted a variance to reduce a side yard setback at 309 South 2nd Street as part of the Doedtman-Moreton apartments project. Another variance request related to the project will be considered at the Board's June meeting.
