Crash on Interstate North of Salem Thursday Morning

The driver was injured in a crash north of Salem Thursday morning.

The crash happened at 11:44am on I-57, five miles from Salem. State police report 22-year-old Zachary Sample of Glen Ellyn was southbound when his car ran off the roadway to the left. Police said Sample overcorrected and left the roadway to the right. The car struck a guardrail and began flipping. The car came to a stop upside down in a ditch.

Sample was taken to Salem Township Hospital, then was airlifted to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.

Sample was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.
