Effingham County Dive Rescue personnel were called to the scene Wednesday of three vehicles in the flood waters in the West Fayette Road river bottoms, west of the city.

Effingham County sheriff's deputies were summoned for a single vehicle that had been in the water unoccupied since about 7am.  Arriving deputies spotted the car in the water, but also two occupied SUVs stranded on a bridge in the middle of the flooded roadway.

Due to the elevated nature of the bridge, the SUVs were still on dry pavement, but the bridge was surrounded by flood waters.  While rescuers were suiting up to affect a rescue, the SUVs and their occupants attempted to cross through the flood waters.  The occupants and the SUVs were able to navigate the waters, but a large amount of debris and other dangerous flood water obstructions could be seen stuck inside the grill and front end of the vehicles.

All occupants were safe and accounted for, while the car was not approached until the flood waters subsided and could be safely recovered.  Emergency personnel were on scene for approximately 30 minutes.

The Effingham County Dive Rescue Team would like to remind everyone to not attempt to cross roadways covered with water or enter any type of flooded area.
