Law Day Celebrated Thursday

The 2019 Law Day observance in the Effingham community featured students from all six county high schools, as they got a look at the day to day workings of city and county government.

Law Day is sponsored nationally by the Elks, and the local observance is sponsored by Effingham Elks Lodge #1016. A noon luncheon was held at the Elks Lodge on South Banker to recognize the participants and their parents as well as the participating government officials.

Effingham and St. Anthony students got to participate in tours of the police station, waste water treatment plant, fire station and the water treatment plant. They also participated in a mock City Council meeting.

Altamont, Beecher City, Dieterich and Teutopolis got to work with County officials for the day and tour County buildings.

Effingham and St. Anthony students were paired with city offices. Noah Allen of Effingham High School was mayor for a day. Other participants were Accounts and Finances Commissioner Gavin Braunecker of St. Anthony High School, Streets and Public Improvements Commissioner Luke Rudolphi of St. Anthony, Police Chief Landon Tucker of EHS, City Treasurer Reese Evans of EHS, City Attorney Jack Hoene of St. Anthony, EMA Coordinator Sophia Poston of St. Anthony, Building Official Avery Rogers of St. Anthony, Public Works Operations Manager Alex Erickson of St. Anthony, Fire Chief Blake Niebrugge of St. Anthony, Communication Manager for the Police Department Karlee Roepke, Director of Tourism Averee Greene of St. Anthony, Economic Development Specialist Jack Elder of St. Anthony, and City Clerk Madelyn Smith of St. Anthony.
