Work is moving ahead on the Jefferson Avenue water main replacement project in the downtown area.

Contractor B&T Drainage has completed the bulk of the new water main construction. The new water main was filled, pressure tested and disinfected late last week.

The contractor flushed the new water main Monday morning and has taken samples to be sent to the IEPA. If the samples come back good, the plan is to start switching over services from the old water main to the new water main later this week.

City Senior Engineering Technician Greg Koester said the work will not involve a boil order, but will require an interruption of water service. The internal plumbing will need to be flushed by running sinks, flushing toilets and the like. For food service establishments, the water supply to ice machines and soda machines will need to be turned off until the internal plumbing has been sufficiently flushed.

Koester said the contractor and City personnel are reviewing the plans and will provide a tentative schedule of the service line switch and will contact affected water customers Tuesday (tomorrow).
