The Village of Dieterich is receiving state grant money to help finance significant recreational improvements at Liberty Memorial Park.

Governor J.B. Pritzker announced the village is receiving $306,600.

Dieterich Village Clerk and Economic Development Director Brittny Gipson said one portion of the project will involve replacing the crumbling tennis courts with multi-use courts that will be striped for tennis and for pickleball.

The project will also involve a handicapped-accessible fishing pier at the village pond and a parking area by the pier. Sidewalk involved in the project will be handicapped-accessible and will lead to the playground at the park. Two pieces of accessible-to-all playground equipment will be added as part of the project, along with new fencing along the park boundary separating the park from a new residential area to the northwest.

Gipson said the project will also involve a 40X50 foot open air addition to the existing pavilion and additional restroom facilities. She said the existing restroom will be converted to all-female usage and a new area will be added for males. Some new picnic tables will be acquired, and the Village plans to do some rehabilitation of the pond not a part of the grant funded work.

Gipson said some of the work will be completed this year.

The Dieterich project is one of 89 in Illinois receiving funds from the $28.9 million grant from the State. All of the projects are designed to acquire open space and develop and improve recreational facilities throughout the state.
