(EFFINGHAM COUNTY FAIR QUEEN SERENA STRULLMYER READY AS COMPETITION BEGAN FRIDAY MORNING IN SPRINGFIELD. THE FLOWERS ARE AN ANNUAL TRADITION COURTESY OF THE COUNTY FAIR BOARD)

Competition is underway in Springfield to determine who will be the 2019 Miss Illinois County Fair Queen.

Effingham County Fair Queen Serena Strullmyer is among the almost 80 contestants in this year's competition, which is taking place at the 2019 Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs Convention. The competition will continue throughout the weekend.

The winner will reign over the 2019 Illinois State Fair and DuQuoin State Fair.

In addition to the queen pageant, the State Fair Talent Contests are set for Saturday in Springfield. Among the competitors will be Effingham County Fair Talent Contest Junior Division Winner Brooklyn Schimmelpfenning and Senior Division Winners Madison Fear and Faith Whitley.

If the talent winners do well, they could perform at this year's state fairs.

The state convention is also an opportunity for fair board members to make contacts with representatives of performers who could end up entertaining at county fairs this summer.
