In every mailing she sends to promote a variety of pro-life efforts, she refers to herself as “Mrs. Jack Koester,” but her friends know her as Loretta.

Loretta Koester, for years the chairman of the Effingham County Right-to-Life Committee, was honored Saturday night with the 2013 Effingham Daily News Citizen of the Year Award. She was presented the award at the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce Business Recognition Gala.

Mrs. Koester has been involved in right-to-life activities since the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court ruling in 1973 allowed legal abortions in the United States. Ironically, she received the award the night before this year’s Right-to-Life Whole Hog Sausage and Egg Breakfast, annually the biggest fundraiser for local right-to-life activities.

By the way, Mrs. Koester reported that 1,352 breakfast meals were served Sunday.

We talked with Loretta Monday morning, and asked how she felt about receiving the award. Click the play icon below for more.
