Bargainers for the Effingham Unit 40 Board of Education and the Effingham Educational Support Professionals met for about three hours Wednesday night, but not much progress was reported toward agreement on a contract.

Effingham Junior High School Secretary Amy Donaldson said Unit 40 Superintendent Mark Doan was unavailable for the mediation session due to the death of his father. Donaldson said, "Really, there wasn't much headway."

Unit 40 Assistant Superintendent Jason Fox said of the session, "We're still working. We're all trying to reach agreement. It's a work in progress."

Another mediation session was scheduled. The session will take place on February 5.

The district's contract with its 130 support staff members expired June 30, 2017. Support staff employees include secretaries, custodians, bus drivers, maintenance, paraprofessionals, cooks, bus aides, library clerks, mechanics and mechanic assistant and warehouse workers.
