An Altamont resident has been sentenced to seven years in prison for soliciting a sex act from a teenaged girl.

47-year-old Jerold Jones was sentenced by Judge Kevin Parker to the maximum sentence possible. Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler sought a stiffer sentence by attempting to bring in a sex offense conviction from Indiana, but the facts in the Indiana case couldn't lead to an extended term. The brother of the victim in the Indiana case appeared to testify in the matter since his sister, the victim, committed suicide.

In the Effingham County case, Jones allegedly made sexual advances to the then-14-year-old girl when she approached him in response to information about a job opportunity. She went with Jones in a vehicle, but when they pulled up to an Altamont motel and Jones got out to register for a room, the girl got out of the vehicle and notified a family member for help.
