The Effingham Park District is working to increase the number of trees planted in local parks.

Park District Director Jeff Althoff told the Park Board Wednesday that 60 or so trees have been planted at Hendelmeyer Park, while some 410 trees are being planted at Evergreen Hollow Park.

Althoff said the trees were obtained from the State.

Some trees have been planted that were contributed by local Rotary clubs. A ceremony will be scheduled later.

Activity is picking up at the Workman Sports and Wellness Complex as the weather cools. Althoff said there are 2,431 member units that translates to 5,387 members. There are 460 Silver Sneakers memberships.

Althoff also reported the Junior NBA Program is off to a fast start. There are 148 second and third grade participants, and 125 fourth and fifth grade participants.

The Park Board passed the tax levy for the new fiscal year. The levy totals $1,172,000, about the same amount as a year ago.
