Hunters in Illinois Harvest Preliminary Total of 80,896 Deer During Firearm Season

A preliminary total of 80,896 deer were taken by hunters during the seven-day Illinois Firearm Deer Season that concluded on Sunday, Dec. 2. The 2018 preliminary harvest total compares to the final total of 80,117 deer harvested during the firearm season in 2017.

The preliminary harvest for the second segment of the firearm season on Nov. 29 through Dec. 2 was 22,060, compared with 28,656 during the second season in 2017.  The preliminary harvest for the first segment of firearm season on Nov. 16-18 was 58,836 deer.

There were 988 deer harvested in Effingham County, 215 of those in the second weekend. That compares to 872 taken last year, an increase of 116 deer this year.

As far as area counties:

--Clay County--1,219 this year, up from 1,111 in 2017

--Cumberland County--776 this year, exactly the same number as in 2017

--Fayette County--1,588, up from 1,545 last year

--Jasper County--1,015 this year, up from 987 taken last year

--Shelby County--1,131 this year, up from 1,069 last year
