For as long as anyone can remember, Trick or Treat in Effingham has been held on Halloween night, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.

There have been those through the years who have suggested a change, and the issue has resurfaced.

City Commissioner Don Althoff said some people approached him about moving Trick or Treat to the weekend. Althoff said they felt it would be less of a hassle and wouldn't occur ahead of a school day the next day.

Commissioner Merv Gillenwater said there was discussion about a different day throughout his term as mayor, but said, "People had an argument against any other night you chose."

Commissioner Kevin Esker said someone might attend the next Council meeting to speak about the issue. Esker asked, "What about after the Halloween Parade?", which is held on Sunday afternoons. That's the approach that has been used by Teutopolis for many years. Their parade is the Friday night before Halloween, and is followed by Trick or Treat.
