North Clay School Board Finalizes Open Gym Guidelines

North Clay school board members this week finalized new guidelines for Open Gym sessions.

Athletic Director Brian Deadmond explained the potential procedure. There was discussion about the "what if's" and details of the potential plan. 

The procedure was approved 6-0 and is as follows:

Open Gym Request Form

Open Gym Regulations:

1. Throughout the school year a variety of Open Gyms must be made available to the students at North Clay.
2. Open gyms may not be gender specific.
3. Open gyms may not be sport specific.
4. Open gyms must be supervised at all times by the Coach or Coaches filling out the Open Gym request.
5. Students must remain in the supervised area for the duration of the open gym.
6. Open gym supervisors must follow school facility use regulations.

1. At NCCUSD #25 Open Gyms shall end at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings. Additionally, no open gyms will be held on Sundays.
2. Open gyms shall not occur on any school holiday in which case school is not in session.
3. In the case school is canceled because of inclement weather, the Athletic Director and building principal will determine if it is safe enough to have the open gym at the school. No coach will  have an open gym on these days without confirming with administration.

• Students participating in open gyms must have a physical on file at the school and they must be registered as a student at North Clay.
• Parents are allowed to be spectators but are not allowed to participate in the open gym or give instruction.
• The open gym must be student led. The coach may not lead any activities and only supervise.

The open gym request form must be turned in to the Athletic Director in a timely manner so that the open gym can be approved and properly publicized to all students.

North Clay board members also approved allowing for North Clay students to be excused for educational reasons, as they plan to attend the 2021 presidential inauguration.

In personnel moves, the Board approved maternity leave for Kimberly Kemmerer, approved a maternity leave for Carrie Kuhl, hired Hanna Allison as a paraprofessional, and approved an amended multi-year contract for principal Keith Price.

Board members heard reports on various happenings in the North Clay district, including a visit by former St. Louis Cardinal Andy Benes last Friday to speak on making good choices and overcoming bad ones, reflecting on his high school years and his seasons in major league baseball. Information was also shared on work by driver's education teacher Nancy Lewis and by driver's ed students to make posters promoting organ donation.
