Newton Woman Dead After Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

A shooting in Newton Saturday afternoon has left one person dead.

Saturday afternoon, at 4:08pm, the Newton Police Department, as well as the Jasper County Sheriff's Department and Jasper County Ambulance were called to the intersection of Maple and Washington Streets in Newton, in response to a female with a gunshot wound.

Dead is 55 year-old Lori Vernier of Newton. The Jasper County Coroner's office reports that the gunshot would is believed to be self-inflicted.

After paramedics arrived, the Jasper County Coroner's office was notified, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman's husband was taken from the scene by Newton City Police, and later released.

The Newton Police Department, the Jasper County Sheriff's Department, the Jasper County Coroner's Office, and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigation Team are continuing their investigation into her death.
