Jasper Unit 1 School Superintendent Andrew Johnson spoke to the Jasper County Board at their meeting Thursday.

Johnson was on hand to discuss a proposed 1% sales tax increase. Revenue from the tax could be used toward work on the school district facilities.

The Board was updated on the proposed county jail expansion project. There are plans to examine the existing building October 18, allowing those assisting with planning for the project to be able to make suggestions on the project.

Board members voted to place the proposed fiscal year budget on display for 30 days. It's expected the budget will be adopted in November for the fiscal year that begins December 1.

The Board approved a new Health Department food ordinance, and also approved insurance renewal rates, which are up about 4% this year.

Also approved was the purchase of a loader for just over $59,000 for the highway department. The Board heard a request from the Economic Development committee to relocate Economic Development Director Amber Volk's office to the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce offices to heighten visability. The Board also discussed the coroner's office budget and salary increases for the coming four-year term as well as pay increases for clerical, ambulance department, and highway department employees. 50 cent per hour increases for the hourly workers were approved.

The Board also scheduled its reorganizational meeting following the November election for noon on December 3. The plan is for a swearing-in ceremony, lunch and the Board meeting.
