Effingham Unit 40 board members Monday adopted a budget for the new fiscal year.

Superintendent Mark Doan said the overall budget calls for $96,000 more in income than in outgo. However, the spending blueprint includes a deficit of $300,873 in the Education Fund.

The Board decided on parameters for non-team sports offered in Unit 40. Swimming is one sport in the district that has a few participants. Board members agreed that those who compete in the IHSA State Series would get a waiver from PE, as do athletes in other in-season sports. Those non-team athletes would also be eligible for an athletic letter or pin or whatever is appropriate for that sport.

There was also discussion of a policy on waiver of taking finals. The one item to be considered is chronic illness. Doan said he and high school principal Kurt Roberts will develop an appeal process for the Board to consider at their monthly meeting in October.

The Board approved the purchase of $20,000 in copy paper from Contract Paper Group and of 30 window air-conditioners for when units need replaced at South Side, East Side, West Side or Effingham Junior High Schools. Also approved was the lease/purchase of six 71-passenger buses through Midwest Bus Sales of Litchfield.

The Board approved an updated crisis plan for the fiscal year. Doan said with the switch to a School Resource Officer provided by the city police department, plans were reviewed both by committees in each district building and by City Police Chief Jeff Fuesting prior to their approval. Two regular meeting dates for the Board were also changed. It'll be the fourth Monday of each month except November, when the meeting will be held on the 19th to miss the Thanksgiving break, and April, when the meeting will be held on the 29th to miss Spring Break.

In personnel moves, the Unit 40 board hired Nancy Moeller as a three-hour cook at the junior high school, transferred Todd Stewart to a four-hour bus driver position, and accepted the resignation of Ty Totten as JV baseball coach.
