The Effingham Police Department is partnering with various local businesses for National Night Out 2018.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make local neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. It's also an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all 50 states, US territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August. Because of the oppressive heat in August, the Effingham Police Department elected to move the Effingham Night Out to Tuesday, September 11.

As a thank you for partnering with Police Chief Jeff Fuesting and city police the past 18 months, the police department wants to show appreciation for that support. With donations from Walmart, Effingham Public Library, Homewood Grill and Springfield Clinic, city police want to celebrate the community and build camaraderie through Effingham's first National Night Out at no cost to the public.

The event is planned from 5:30 to 8pm on the 11th at the Effingham Public Library parking lot at 200 N. 3rd Street. It will be an opportunity to meet local police officers, win prizes, enjoy food, talk with neighbors, meet new faces, and help strengthen the community bond.

The evening will feature backpacks and a bicycle giveaway provided by Walmart, physicians and nurses from Springfield Clinic, a book giveaway provided by Effingham Public Library, ice cream provided by Homewood Grill, and pulled pork and chips provided by Effingham Police Department.
