The Effingham City Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday granted one variance regarding signs, but denied the other request.

The Board granted a variance to Effingham Event Center Corporation for two existing billboards on the west side of the Event Center property next door to Hardee's on West Fayette Avenue. The signs were in place prior to the last revision of City guidelines regarding signage and the decision was that no substantial changes have occurred in the property or how it is being utilized.

The variance request denied Tuesday had been submitted by Sandschafer Electric for permission to erect a billboard on property west of the business. The Illinois Department of Transportation has a prohibition regarding signs being erected less than 600 feet from another billboard. The Sandschafers put up two other billboards east of their business within the past year, leading to the denial last night of the request for the sign to the west.

City Building Official Michelle Wilkins indicated the variance request might be revisited with a request by the company for a smaller billboard.
