The Effingham County unemployment rate for June was 3.5%. That's unusual, in that it is slightly higher than the rate one year earlier. The June 2017 rate for the county was 3.4%.

The 3.5% rate for June is also up from a 2.8% jobless rate seen in both April and May.

The higher rate than a year earlier is something seen in most area counties.

Here are the numbers:

Coles--5.3% in June, up from 4.9% one year earlier

Shelby--4.4% in June, up from 4.2%

Clay--4.9%, up from 4.7%

Jasper--4.9%, up from 4.3%

There were a couple of exceptions.

Cumberland County's June jobless rate was 3.5%, down from 3.6% one year earlier. Fayette County's rate was 4.9%, down from 5% one year earlier.

The figures compare to the state's June jobless rate of 4.5%.
