Blake Doehring has been hired as varsity boys basketball coach and athletic director at South Central High School. Doehring was also hired as a high school teacher as part of a busy agenda Wednesday night at South Central.

Doehring will succeed Jamie Van Scyoc, who was recently named South Central High School principal. Doehring has most recently worked in Effingham Unit 40 as a teacher and coach, but has varsity coaching experience in another district.

The Board also approved a three-year contract for Van Scyoc as principal through the 2020-2021 school year, and approved contract extensions for Superintendent Kerry Herdes, middle school principal Greg Grinestaff and elementary principal Sara Rose through the 2020-2021 school year.

In other personnel moves, the South Central board approved a resignation from Christa Malone as a middle school teacher and from Ted Kerner as middle school boys basketball coach; approved a leave of absence for Nancy Krutsinger that has already been taken; approved Brittany Garrett as Beta Sponsor at the middle school; approved Stacy Lockhart and Angie Sapp as Student Council sponsors for the high school; hired Olivia Ball as an elementary teacher; and hired Jessica Gile as an elementary teacher's aide.

The Board approved an amended budget for the current fiscal year. The original budget projected a $523,000 deficit for the year, but the deficit by year's end was reduced to just over $35,000. The Board also approved a $115,000 interfund loan from the education fund to the capital projects fund. The board also approved the abatement amount from Farmer Environmental Services for work done last summer on the high school project at Farina. The district will receive reimbursement for those funds in the final payments on the project from the State.

The Board also approved handbook changes as presented by Van Scyoc and Herdes.
