A Canadian was the person fatally injured in a collision in Fayette County, and one of the drivers involved left the scene of the crash.

The crash that resulted in the death caused eastbound I-70 in the area near Mulberry Grove to be closed for several hours while the crash was investigated.

The crash was reported to Illinois State Police at 8:50pm Wednesday, about three miles east of Mulberry Grove. A preliminary investigation revealed that a semi pulling a flatbed trailer was parked on the right shoulder. The driver of the unit, 46-year-old Peter F. Peters of Elmira, Ontario, Canada, was standing outside of the rig on the driver's side near the middle of the trailer when the rig was sideswiped by a semi tractor trailer rig. Police say Peters was pinched between both units and fatally injured.

The semi tractor trailer rig continued traveling eastbound, leaving the scene of the crash.

State police closed eastbound I-70 in the area of the crash about 1:30am to complete their investigation into the crash. The roadway was re-opened about 8:30am.

Police are continuing efforts to locate the driver who left the scene.
