State Crop Report for Week Ending May 20

Corn planting was winding down statewide and farmers made good progress with soybeans planting and hay cutting last week. There were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 20.

Statewide, the average temperature was 69.7 degrees, 5.7 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.06 inches, 0.13 inches above normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 17 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 17 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.

Corn planted was at 96 percent, compared to 87 percent last year and the 5- year average of 87 percent. Corn emerged was at 84 percent. Corn condition was rated at 1 percent poor, 11 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 30 percent excellent.

Soybeans planted was at 81 percent, compared to 44 percent last year and the 5-year average of 42 percent. Soybeans emerged was at 57 percent.

Sorghum planted was at 30 percent. Winter wheat headed reached 74 percent, compared to 93 percent last year and the 5-year average of 74 percent.

Winter wheat condition was rated at 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 12 percent excellent.
