Illinois State Police (ISP) officials announce charges against Matthew A. Milby, 19, of Dixon for his involvement in a shooting that occurred just after 8am Wednesday at Dixon High School.

State police were requested by the Dixon Police Department to conduct an independent investigation into a shooting that occurred at Dixon High School. Through their investigation ISP- Zone 2 Agents discovered that Dixon Police Department and Dixon High School Resource Officer Mark Dallas was on duty at Dixon High School, when he heard several shots fired near the school auditorium, which was occupied by students preparing to take part in a graduation ceremony rehearsal. Officer Dallas rushed to the area and confronted Milby. Officer Dallas pursued the suspect on foot after Milby fled out of the high school. During the foot pursuit, Milby fired several rounds at Officer Dallas. Officer Dallas returned fire striking the suspect; Milby was taken into custody at that time. No other students, faculty, or officers were injured.

Milby was treated at a Dixon-area hospital then was released mid-morning Thursday. The Lee County State’s Attorney’s Office has approved three charges of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, Class X Felonies, with a $2 million bond, against Milby. The investigation is still open and ongoing, and more charges may be filed in the near future. Milby was taken to Lee County Jail and is expected to make his initial court appearance on Friday.

Illinois State Police are continuing their investigation, and have learned Milby's mother purchased the weapon used in the shooting; a 9mm semi-automatic rifle, in 2012. Police are attempting to determine how Milby obtained access to the weapon.

State Police recovered surveillance footage from inside the school; the video footage is being reviewed as part of the investigation. There was no video footage recovered from outside the school.

Dixon is in northern Illinois.
