Fire did major damage to a house south and east of Montrose Wednesday afternoon.

No one was injured.

The call came shortly after 4pm to the Will residence. The family business, HWC Construction, is located behind the house. Teutopolis Fire Chief Tim McMahon said a crew just back from a concrete job spotted smoke pouring from the area under the roof of the two-story brick structure.

A number of fire companies were on scene, including Montrose, Teutopolis, Dieterich, Toledo, Wade Township, and Crooked Creek, and Montrose Fire District Chief Chris Overbeck said firefighters from Effingham and a chief from Neoga staffed the Montrose station in case of another fire call.

Overbeck said the fire started in the southwest corner of the attic. Firefighters kept hauling water to the scene and knocked down the fire, keeping the exterior of the home and some of the roof intact.
