A Shobonier man suffered what were termed "major injuries" when his car slammed into the rear of a stopped semi Sunday afternoon.

20-year-old Shawn Zimmerman was headed north on I-57 near Mt. Vernon at 4:40pm when his car struck the trailer of the semi that had stopped on the roadway for an earlier crash.

Zimmerman was airlifted from the scene to a regional hospital. The driver of the semi, 32-year-old Ryan Elliot of Franklin, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Zimmerman was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash. State police say there's no evidence Zimmerman hit the brakes prior to striking the semi.

All lanes on northbound I-57 were closed to allow the medical helicopter to land at the scene. One lane was reopened at 5:25pm. The second lane was reopened at 6;25pm.
