The Jasper County Board Wednesday followed the Effingham County Board's lead in passing a resolution opposing restrictions on guns. The resolution resolves that if the State of Illinois "infringes upon the inalienable rights granted by the Second Amendment, Jasper County shall become a 'sanctuary county' for all firearms unconstitutionally prohibited by the government of the State of Illinois, in that Jasper County will prohibit its employees from enforcing the unconstitutional actions of the state government."

There was discussion on whether another word could be used rather than "sanctuary" but, eventually, it was left in the resolution. Board member Fehrenbacher was not present for the meeting, but the 11 members present each voted in favor of the resolution.

The Jasper board also discussed renovation or replacement of the county jail. Smart Watt representative Orry Cummings said his firm would be involved if the County would decide to begin a jail renovation project. The firm would look at all facilities to help identify areas where energy dollars could be saved. Cummings said any savings could help offset renovation costs. If the Board decides to build a jail, Cummings said the firm would help coordinate a company for the work, and could help with bonding issues.

In the meantime, the Board will look at an architect to design a new building or renovate the existing facility. There was also discussion of whether such a project could be undertaken in phases. There was also discussion of contacting the City of Newton to see if the City would like to join in the project and share space.

It was voted to have the Board's building committee contact various financial institutions to have information available for the May meeting.
