Judge Mark Stedelin has agreed to allow a 69-year-old Salem man to visit his wife who he is accused of trying to murder.

The Public Defender for Charles Wood had filed the motion seeking to arrange the supervised visit to the nursing home where his wife now lives. The nursing home indicated to the court that they had no objections. Prosecutors did not take a position on the request. A niece has agreed to supervise the visits.

Wood was arrested in January after calling 911 and admitting to giving his bedridden wife an overdose of insulin in an attempt to kill her at their home. She was admitted to a nursing home following the incident. Wood was released from the Marion County Jail on bond in February after it was reduced to $5,000 cash.

Wood has also now waived a jury trial and is scheduled for a bench trial on June 5th. A jury trial had been scheduled for April 16th.

A psychiatric evaluation as to Wood's sanity has now been completed and is under seal of the court.
