Effingham City Police joined officers from the Charleston, Marshall and Casey police departments, the Coles County Sheriff's Department and the Illinois State Police in conducting a safety lockdown drill and canine search authorized by the Charleston School District at Charleston High School.

Officials said the lockdown drill and search was to ensure the ability to protect students and to detect any presence of illegal drugs or other contraband.  A statement from the Charleston District indicated "the District's concern for maintaining a safe and drug-free learning environment was the impetus for this safety drill and search.  Our youth are our future and deserve to attend school in a safe and drug-free environment."

Only law enforcement officials, administrators and designed staff members were allowed in the building during the safety lockdown drill and canine search.  Trained and certified canines were used to conduct the search.
