A Pana man faces prison time on drug charges stemming from an incident in Cowden.

Shelby County State's Attorney Gina Vonderheide said 40-year-old Michale Brown was sentenced to one year in prison for unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver.

The charge stemmed from an incident in November when two Shelby County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Cowden for a report of a suspicious van running at an apartment building. A caller reported that a man on crutches was going door-to-door.

Deputies found Brown in the back seat of the van. While being searched, $1,100 was found on his person. The deputies smelled a strong odor of cannabis, asked Brown where the cannabis was located, and Brown answered, "In my bag." More than 10 grams of cannabis was found in Brown's backpack, along with a digital scale and multiple small baggies. Brown was arrested and taken to Shelby County Detention Center in Shelbyville. At the jail, the cannabis was weighed at 25.5 grams. The deputies also counted 54 small baggies, found a small grinder and several other items of drug paraphernalia. Brown was also found to possess dabs, which are concentrated doses of cannabis.

Brown's prison sentence will be served concurrent with a parole violation case.
