Effingham County Coroner Duane Guffey has died.

Guffey died Thursday evening from what is believed to have been a heart attack. Guffey became ill at home and was first taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham and then was transferred to Springfield where he died.

Guffey was well-known in the county. He was in his second term as county coroner. He also operated Guffey's Quality Cleaners and Formal Wear in Effingham. He was also a longtime part-time officer with the Effingham City Police Department.

Niemann said state statutes indicate Effingham County Sheriff Dave Mahon will serve as acting coroner until a successor is appointed.

There are two individuals currently serving as Deputy Coroners in Effingham County, Linda Mette and Gerry Kingery.
