Altamont Boy Scout Troop 140 has its first Eagle Scout in 22 years.

Alan Ledbetter, son of Joe and Tracie Ledbetter, has been in scouting since second grade.  He has participated in local troop activities, various camps including the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree, Spring Rendezvous, Summer Camps, Klondike, Winter Survival and campouts.  He's helped others with their Eagle Scout projects and has helped his troop with community service projects and fundraising events.  Alan was selected by his troop to become an Order of the Arrow member.

Alan wanted to join Scouting in first grade but there weren't enough participants to have a Tiger pack.  In second grade, he tried again and has been in Scouting ever since.  He has been a Wolf, Bear and Webelo in Cub Scouts, and he has been a Boy Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and now Eagle Scout.

Ledbetter had to earn 21 merit badges to be eligible for Eagle Scout, but has already earned 30 merit badges.

Alan's Eagle Project was to put up a fence in the backyard of the Effingham County Animal Shelter so the dogs would have a place to run.  It took 216 hours to complete the project, which led to Alan's approval as an Eagle Scout in August.

Ledbetter is a junior at Altamont Community High School, is an Altamont FFA Chapter member, and is active in his church youth group.

Alan's Eagle Scout Ceremony will be held today, December 15, at 2pm at Altamont First United Methodist Church.
