More change for the Altamont school district.

The Mt. Vernon Board of Education Wednesday hired Altamont Superintendent Jeff Fritchtnitch to lead their district. Fritchtnitch will complete the current school year before departing. He will begin duties in Mt. Vernon on July 1.

The news is a bit of a surprise since Fritchtnitch had announced his planned retirement as Altamont superintendent in a couple of years. He told us by phone the Mt. Vernon opportunity is a good one for him and for his family, a "good challenge".

Fritchtnitch had notified the Altamont school board Tuesday of the decision. He will formally resign at the Board's next meeting.

Fritchtnitch has been with the Altamont district for 10 years, succeeding Jim Littleford when he departed for the Charleston school district.

Fritchtnitch said his time at Altamont has "been a wonderful, wonderful journey" and said "It's not easy...it's bittersweet".
