The Effingham Public Library Board is looking at ways to make their facility available to more young people. The Board this week agreed to talk with Effingham Unit 40 and Teutopolis Unit 50 school district officials about making library cards available to all students in those two districts.

Library Director Amanda McKay said discussions are just beginning. The Board's endorsement of the idea will allow her to talk with the school officials.

State law says such endeavors are allowed under intergovernmental agreements between the various bodies. The cost of the cards will be a matter for discussion. The library charges fees for out-of-district residents to possess a library card, but McKay said the cost could be in the form of services, as well as monetary fees.

The Board also endorsed forgiving fines accrued by some kids if they sign up later this year for the Summer Reading Program.

Library board members formally approved a project with Digital Reel to make microfilm on file at the library available in a different format. Former library board member Dave Seiler is undertaking a fundraising effort for the project.

McKay also reported to the Board that a firm might be interested in leasing the former library building on Market Avenue. More information will be forthcoming.

The Board also approved one day of paid time off for all staff members employed at the library as of December 31. McKay explained that some staff don't get paid time off as part of their normal employment due to the amount of hours they work, so this is a way to thank them for their service.
