Fire damaged a home in Altamont on Thursday.

Altamont Fire Chief Jon Becker said firefighters were summoned at 11am to the home of Dave and Donna Gottman at 6 Tower Lane, in an area between Zink Apartments and Schmitt Park. The fire began in the southwest corner of the home in the laundry room, but Becker said he doesn't know what caused the fire.

Fire damage was pretty much confined to the laundry room, but there was heat and smoke damage throughout the structure.

Becker said no humans were injured, but said a dog and a cat perished in the fire.

Firefighters were on scene for close to two hours. Altamont firefighters were assisted by crews from St. Elmo, Shumway and Brownstown, along with Abbott EMS, Effingham County Sheriff's Department and Altamont Police Department.
