An Effingham County Jail inmate has died after a suicide attempt in the jail over the weekend.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Department reports 32-year-old Andrew Gates of Altamont attempted suicide Saturday afternoon while in his jail cell.

Correctional officers discovered Gates and provided medical aid. Gates was initially transported to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, and was later transferred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Gates died at Carle Monday morning.

Effingham County Sheriff David Mahon recognized what he termed "the quick actions of the Correctional Officers on duty, but in the best interests of the public and for transparency has requested the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation to investigate the incident."

Gates entered the jail last Thursday, and was being held on charges of residential burglary after probable cause was found to hold him over for trial.
