The Effingham Kmart store will be closing in late January.

In a statement released today, Sears Holdings Corporation said the Effingham Kmart store is one of 45 Kmart stores nationwide that will be closing. The Effingham store is the only one in Illinois that is closing.

Store employees were notified of the closing today.

In addition to the 45 Kmart stores closing, the statement indicates that 18 Sears stores nationwide will also be closing in late January, but the Effingham Sears store will remain open. None of the 18 Sears stores closing are located in Illinois.

The statement reads that the closings are due to downsizing. It also states that the stores will remain open through the Christmas season. Eligible employees will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.

The release also indicates that liquidation sales will begin as early as November 9.
