Effingham Park Board members Wednesday heard that activity was beginning to pick up at the Richard E. Workman Sports and Wellness Complex after a summer of outdoor activities.

April Niemann of the Sports Complex said the combination of a gradual change in the weather and the start of the school year have combined to increase activity.

Enrollment for basketball at the Sports Complex is also up from a year ago. Park District Director Jeff Althoff said 139 have signed up for basketball, compared to 71 at this time last year. Niemann also noted that memberships at the Sports Complex are up slightly from last year.

There was also discussion led by Althoff as to facility repairs needed at district facilities. Althoff said fencing at four or five ball diamonds needs repaired or replaced. Parking lot areas and roadways at Hendelmeyer Park also need some attention. Althoff said there are potholes that are a problem. Another matter needing attention is the footing in the outdoor batting cages.

Althoff said there was discussion of remodeling the Park District office area at the Ron Diehl Center including some new desks in an effort to create some space.

The Park Board also met in closed session to discuss personnel matters, but there was no action by the Board.
