The home of Paul and Lois Hartke of Effingham was damaged by fire Wednesday morning.

Effingham firefighters were called to the residence at Parkview and Temple shortly before 7am.

Effingham Fire Chief Joe Holomy said the fire began in the basement of the residence near the back, or west, wall. Holomy said there was smoke damage throughout the structure, but flames were confined to the basement. The back of the roof of the home had to be vented.

The Hartkes were in St. Louis at the time of the fire. They have since returned.

Firefighters from Shumway, Teutopolis and Montrose assisted, as did Effingham city police, Abbott EMS and Ameren. No injuries were reported.

Holomy said the State Fire Marshal's Office has been summoned to help determine the cause of the fire.
