Concerned about increasing taxes and the state of affairs in Springfield, current Marion County Board Member and local businessman Adam Smith has announced his intention to run in the March 20th Republican primary for the State House of Representatives for the 107th District of Illinois. Smith, the owner of Smith Truck Service which services the local oil industry, is also a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker of Centralia.

“Oppressive tax rates always lead to an erosion of individual liberty,” said Smith. In addition to rolling back the recent income tax hike, Smith said, “the property tax burden on the households and families in this district are at a pinnacle, and are affecting many peoples’ lives. As a realtor, I see nearly every day how much property taxes influence my clients’ decisions.” He added, “if we want to have more homeowners living the ‘American Dream,’ we must attract employers to our state and lower property taxes.”

Smith said Illinois is driving businesses and taxpayers out of the state at an alarming rate, and that the trend will continue until real reforms which make Illinois a more business-friendly state are made in Springfield. Smith said it is no secret that the overall tax burden in Illinois is “absurd.” He said, “there is a limit to what is sustainable and we have exceeded it.  It is time to bring Illinois back from the edge of the cliff before it’s too late.” Smith also supports term limits for legislative officeholders, saying “we have had a permanent tax increase being implemented by temporary politicians.”

“Learning from my family’s business experience and as a small business owner myself for over ten years now,” said Smith, “my top priorities as a legislator will be to support efforts of real business reform and lower taxes.” Smith said he is determined to bring a business mind to the state legislature, as well as a pro-freedom agenda, including his support of the pro-life cause and also of the Second Amendment.

A graduate of Centralia High School, Smith was born and raised in Centralia. Being raised on a farm, Schwartz Orchards in Centralia, Smith chose to seek a degree at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he studied Plant and Soil Science and graduated with a specialization in Commercial Horticulture.

Smith is married to Gina, his wife of 16 years, and they have three children. In addition to the County Board, he also serves as Chairman of the Board of Elders at Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia, and as a delegate to the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

The 107th District is currently represented by Republican John Cavaletto, who is retiring. Smith thanked Representative Cavaletto for all the work he and his wife have done for the Marion County Republican Party over the last ten years.
