The Effingham County Board Monday declared September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, following a poignant address by Elizabeth Weidner of Teutopolis.

Elizabeth is currently serving as Effingham County Junior Miss. She is also dealing with childhood cancer. Attired with her tiara and sash, she spoke of her own battle and how a small percentage of research dollars...4%...go for childhood cancer. She urged awareness and support for her fight and the battle fought by kids everywhere.

Elizabeth said gold ribbons are being distributed to remind of her struggle and so many young people like her.

Elizabeth wears many hats in addition to her tiara. She was also on hand to help represent Effingham County 4-H, since the first week of October will be National 4-H Week. She joined several other 4-Hers present for the declaration of the week by the Board.
