St. Elmo resident Alexander Beccue has entered a not guilty plea to charges of first degree murder. The 24-year-old Beccue is charged with the shooting death of Joshua Smith of Ramsey on August 11 at a residence in Ramsey.

Beccue left the residence after the early morning incident and was taken into custody that afternoon when he returned to where he was living.

Beccue was charged with two counts of first degree murder after Smith died the afternoon of the shooting. He also faces counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of a weapon by a felon. He is accused of using a handgun to shoot Smith in the head.

Beccue pleaded not guilty to the charges during a court appearance this week. His pre-trial hearing was set for 1pm on October 31.

Beccue is being held under $1 million bond. He will be held by the Illinois Department of Corrections and DOC will return him to Vandalia for court hearings.
