The Effingham County Sheriff's Department partnered with the US Marshal Service in the early morning hours Tuesday to conduct a Sex Offender Compliance Detail in Effingham County. The Effingham County State's Attorney Investigator and a member of the Department of Homeland Security assisted with the joint detail.

The operation began with a short briefing at the sheriff's office, where each member was assigned a partner for the duration of the detail. Each team was given a list of registered adult sexual offenders, juvenile sex offenders and violent offenders. 19 of the offenders live within the Effingham city limits, eight live in Altamont, and the remaining 27 reside throughout the county.

There are 38 adult sex offenders, 12 juvenile sex offenders and four violent offenders.

During the operation, the team was able to confirm through direct contact or investigative techniques the compliance of the offenders. One individual, Christopher Buening, was found to be out of compliance with maintaining a valid Illinois driver's license or a valid Illinois photo ID card and was cited. Seven offenders were flagged for additional investigation for what the Sheriff termed "very minor technical violations of the Sex Offender Registration Act". The followup and investigation into these cases will be conducted by the State's Attorney Investigator.

Sheriff Dave Mahon thanked the Marshal's Service, the Department of Homeland Security and the State's Attorney's Office for assisting the Sheriff's Office with the detail.
