Good training and good cooperation has led to the arrest of five Chicagoland residents on forgery counts in Effingham.

(CASEY MYERS)

Effingham City Police Chief Jeff Fuesting said the five were out passing counterfeit $100 bills at businesses in Effingham's north business district Friday. Fuesting said some employees of the businesses have participated in "business watch" meetings and have taken training classes on what to look for when suspicious activity is occurring. He said the employees picked up on descriptions and MO's (methods of operation) exhibited by the suspects. The City had officers on patrol in the area and were able to respond quickly when the store employees phoned for assistance.

Fuesting said the five suspects were traveling in the same vehicle when it was stopped by city police. Some of them had fake currency on them at the time of the vehicle stop.

According to Fuesting, city police believe the suspects had been passing the funny money in communities all along I-57.

The five arrested on forgery counts are 31-year-old Jeanette L. Jones of Calumet Park, 18-year-old Nianna S. Reed of Chicago, 32-year-old Casey L. Myers of St. Charles, 31-year-old Mark W. Washington of Chicago, and 33-year-old Reginald L. Tate of Chicago. Myers was also arrested on charges of possession of controlled substance and obstructing justice.
