Community members and Oakland High School alumni from near and far will gather to say goodbye to the old building during the "OHS: 90 Years of Memories" event at the school on Saturday, May 12.

This will provide the last organized opportunity for people to visit the high school building, which is scheduled to be demolished after the end of the school year.

Here's a rundown of the day's events, followed by ways everyone -- even those who can't attend -- can get involved.

The building will open for self-guided tours from noon to 2 p.m. Don't miss your last opportunity to walk the halls of the old OHS, which has been an important community landmark since it hosted its first classes in 1921-1922.

At 2 p.m., join in the New Gym to hear entertaining and nostalgic alumni stories. Alumni band members will play the old school song. Merchandise featuring the event logo will be raffled off, and light refreshments will be served.

Before and after the program, group photos will be taken in front of OHS. These photos will be available for purchase on a CD for $12. Forms will be available at the event and online.

After the program, people can gather at the Oakland Lake Park pavilion (across the street from the New Gym) to continue reminiscing at a picnic table or around the bonfire. A small concession stand will be available. The pavilion has been reserved for the entire evening for use by OHS alumni and friends.

Throughout the day, a collection of photographs artistically detailing nostalgic points of interest in the OHS building will be offered for purchase from photographer Elisha (Houk) Farmer, an OHS alumna. An archival CD containing about 500 high-resolution photos is $25. A 250-page, high-quality keepsake photo book will be $110 (plus $10 shipping if needed); this reflects very little markup. These CDs and books will be available at the event. Order forms are also available online at www.OHSmemories.com.

T-shirts, mugs, bags and magnets are among the huge variety of items featuring the "OHS: 90 Years of Memories" logo. Merchandise is only available online: www.OHSmemories.com.

Donations are being collected for a memorial monument to be placed at a later date on the west edge of the current OHS lot. Plans call for a black granite stone to be set in two columns made of bricks from OHS; OHS graduate Jim Craven has volunteered to build the brick columns. The front will feature an etching of the building by OHS graduate Gary Pierson of Adams Memorials in Charleston. The scope and scale of the monument will depend on the amount of funds collected. As currently planned, the cost will be $2,500. To help make this monument possible, please send a check payable to "OHS Memories" to Janice Hunt, 607 Parkside Court, Oakland, IL 61943.
